On the evening of December 9, several hundred North Carolinians, who were led by Reverend Dr. William Barber, gathered for a rally to protest NC Senate Bill 382. The rally was held on the grounds of the capitol building in Raleigh. Following the rally the protestors marched to the General Assembly where the left letters to the legislators expressing their disapproval of SB 382.

SB 382 was hastily written in secret and was introduced to the public as a hurricane relief bill. Only 12 pages of the 132 page bill are related to recovery for Western NC. The remaining pages are devoted to sweeping changes to the election ballot counting timeline, State Board of Elections structure, and sweeping changes to the Executive and Judicial branches of North Government. All of these changes are intended to seize power by the Republican legislative majority.

Governor Roy Cooper vetoed the bill on November 26 and on December 2, the Senate Republican majority rushed a veto override vote after clearing the Senate gallery of all spectators.

The NC House Republicans will possibly attempt their veto override vote on Wednesday, December 11.
