On Tuesday, July 29, the Republican majority North Carolina Senate and House voted to override Governor Josh Stein’s vetoes of eight bills dealing with guns, immigration, gender issues, electric utilities, large corporations, and the state auditor and privacy issues. Overflow crowds filled the galleries of both chambers of the General Assembly for the morning sessions when the veto votes were taken.
House Republicans apparently failed to secure enough votes to override the vetoes of two bills that deal with matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and did not attempt those overrides during Tuesday's sessions.
Our own Senator Natalie Murdock and Democratic Leader Representative Robert Reives did what they could to prevent the veto overrides by the Republicans. They always do what’s best for Chatham County and for all of North Carolina.
