Greetings Chatham Dems,
No Kings! North Carolinians came out in force on Saturday to show their opposition to the Trumpist efforts to undermine our democracy. A large and joyful crowd gathered in Pittsboro to show solidarity and to cheer on speakers and musicians. Check out our photoblog. And, read the post from Orange County’s state Sen. Graig Meyer about the rallies and steps you can take to join the movement.
Wondering what you can do now? Here are some urgent action items …
Republicans in the General Assembly are preparing to steal a U.S. House seat. Votes are scheduled for TODAY and TOMORROW in the General Assembly, on a new congressional district map aimed at cutting another Democrat out of the U.S. House. This map was ram-rodded through the legislature. Steps you can take to oppose this steal:
Pack the Gallery of the General Assembly today. Public comments start at 10. The NC Senate is scheduled to vote at 3. But, brace yourself for changes. Part of the Republican strategy is to keep us guessing.
Attend the Redistricting Watch Rally on Tuesday, starting at 11:30 a.m. at the State Capitol building.
Live in a municipal district? Don't forget to vote! Early voting is underway for municipal elections for Pittsboro, Siler City, Cary, Goldston, and Apex. If you live in one of these municipal districts, you can find your sample ballot here. (You will need to enter your name to see the sample ballot for your municipal district.) Visit our website to find information about candidates running for Pittsboro Town Council and offices in Siler City.
GOOD NEWS! Democrats are helping working families. Gov. Josh Stein announced that more than $6.5 billion in medical debt has been wiped clean for over 2.5 million residents across the state. This initiative, first launched under Gov. Roy Cooper, leverages the Medicaid system to help hospitals clear past medical debt and adopt practices that prevent patients from being buried under crushing medical bills in the future.
Check out photos from the recent fundraiser hosted by Senator Natalie Murdock and Attorney General Jeff Jackson.
